This article serves as a reference for adding detail to any amigurumi project. In my patterns, I like to add a and cheeks because they add a spark of personality!
It is possible that some item will be added to this article down the line if I find other interesting techniques related to amigurumi details or make other articles about it.
Smile
- Take a length of yarn and put it on your needle (for an amigurumi made with 6 weight yarn, I use a 4-weight yarn).
- Insert the needle in a stitch on the side of the body and make it come out where you want the right corner of your smile to be. Leave a tail about 4-5 inches long going out of the side of the body.
- Insert the needle where you want the left corner of your smile to be and make it come out between the 2 corners, one stitch below.
- Go through the same stitch again, making sure to trap the loop you just created. The needle should go out from the stitch in step 1.
- Make a knot with the two tails.
- Put both tails on your needle, make them go through the stitch they come out of and take them out a little further.
- Cut the yarn.

Cheeks
- Take a length of pink yarn and put it on your needle (for an amigurumi made with 6-weight yarn, I use a 6-weight yarn as well).
- Insert the needle in a stitch on the side of the body and make it come out where you want the right side of the right cheek.
- Insert the needle one stitch to the left coming out the stitch you were in (effectively just wrapping around the stitch once).
- Insert the needle once again one stitch to the left, but this time making it come out where you want the right side of the left cheek to be.
- Repeat step 3.
- Insert the needle once again one stitch to the left, this time making it come out the stitch you entered in step 1.
- Make a knot with the two tails.
- Put both tails on your needle, make them go through the stitch they come out of and take them out a little further.
- Cut the yarn.
